Windowtherm Mounting Types

Before you make an order, you must first understand Windowtherm mounting types.

◼︎ Surface and Surface-on-sill mount (We typically specify this type of mount as it provides the best protection against air leakage)

  • Surface:
All four sides of the panel are mounted on trim using twist clip fasteners. Weather-stripping is applied to the back of the panel frame and attached by screwing clips to the trim.

  • Surface-on-Sill:

The tops and sides are mounted against trim using twist clip fasteners, and the bottom rests on a sill.

◼︎ Compression mount (Most common for homeowners)
Windowtherm is prepared with weather-stripping on the edges of the panel frame to establish a friction fit within the window opening. Compression mount does not involve mechanical mounting of any kind.

◼︎ Recess and Recess-on-sill mount (Similar to Surface mount, but recessed against stops. Requires time and skill to install.)

  • Recess:
All four sides of the panel are mounted against stops. Weather-stripping is applied to the back of the panel frame and attached by using angle clips. (Good for skylights)

  • Recess-on-Sill:

The top and sides are mounted against stops using angle clip fasteners, and the bottom rests on a sill.

◼︎ Custom mount
New construction presents opportunities for various alternatives to securely mount Windowtherm and meet your specific design requirements. Consult a design or construction professional to consider various options and ideas.

Study your windows

  • Does your window trim lend itself to surface or recess mounting? What plane will your Windowtherm fit in? Does the trim need to be modified to accept Windowtherm?

  • If your trim needs to be modified, can you modify the trim yourself, or do you need a contractor’s help?

  • Will blinds and window hardware interfere conflict with the Windowtherm panel? Are you willing to move blinds and/or hardware to make way for Windowtherm?

  • If your windows are curved or arched and the trim cannot readily accommodate square Windowtherm panels for air sealing, custom templates will be required. Contact us to arrange a phone consultation.

Use Our Estimate Form

Fill out our downloadable estimate form using the guidelines provided. This will NOT constitute an order – you will decide whether to proceed or not later.

For each panel in your order, provide width and height dimensions of your window opening and desired mounting type:

  • Surface-mounted panels:
Carefully measure from side to side and top to bottom of the recess opening. (If the measurements vary, choose the smallest.) Provide panel width and height measurements to the 1/16”. Indicate if the panel will sit on a sill. (We will be adding approximately 3” to the width and either 1.5” or 3” to the height depending on whether or not there is a sill.)

  • Compression-mounted panels:

Carefully measure from side to side and top to bottom of the recess opening. (If the measurements vary, choose the smallest.) Provide panel width and height measurements to the 1/16”. (We will be subtracting 5/8” from the width and 1/2” from the height to account for the weather-stripping.)

  • Recess-mounted panels:
Carefully measure from side to side and top to bottom of the recess opening in which you want to mount the panels. (If the measurements vary, choose the smallest.) Provide panel width and height measurements to the 1/16”. Remember: too small and the panel will not snug up against the stops; too big and the panel may not fit in the opening. (We will be subtracting 1/4” from the width and the height to be sure the panel will fit.)

  • For curved and arched windows:
Provide a rough square foot calculation of the window area, the elevation of the bottom of the windows or array of windows, and the elevation at the top – both in feet.

  • Email us your filled-out form including your name, email address and phone number and shipping address.

  • We will send you an estimate based on the information you provide, and an estimated production time. We will fabricate your order once we receive pre-payment in full.
